Lithological description
Grey to brown fine to medium sand, moderately sorted, mostly non-calcareous but calcareous near base, sporadic silt layers or granule laminae.
Depositional setting
Periglacial aeolian (in floodplain next to dry river bed).
Definition of lower boundary
Sharp contact with fluvial sand (Kreftenheye Formation) and sandy silt (Wijchen Member, Kreftenheye Formation).
Definition of upper boundary
Locally exposed at the surface. Sharp contact with fluvial sand and clay (Echteld Formation) or peat (Basal Peat Bed, Nieuwkoop Formation).
Thickness indication
Up to about 20 m.
Geographical distribution
Clustered patches in the Rhine-Meuse floodplain of the western and central Netherlands.
Regional correlation
North Sea: not differentiated; UK: not present; GER: not present; BEL: part of Gent Formation, Wildert Member (in Scheldt floodplain) (Vernes et al. 2018).
Age
Late Pleistocene (Late Weichselian) - Greenlandian (early Holocene).

Origin of name
Named after the village of Delwijnen, south of Utrecht in the central Netherlands (Törnqvist et al. 1994).
Previous name(s)
Riverdune deposits formerly part of the Kreftenheye Formation (Doppert et al. 1975).
