Lower Rotliegend Group

Code
RV
Status
Formal (Van Adrichem Boogaert 1976). Amended (NAM & RGD 1980; Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1994).
Lithological description

Sequence of red-brown, siliciclastic sediments and basaltic volcanics, in highly variable proportions.

Depositional setting

Fluvial. Arid to semi-arid environment and basaltic lava flows, related to late Hercynian rifting.

Definition of lower boundary

Disconformably overlies the erosion surface at the top of the Limburg Group. It succeeds mainly fine-grained red beds or coal measures. The lower boundary has been placed at this disconformity, which may be difficult to distinguish in a red-bed succession.

Definition of upper boundary

The upper boundary is formed by the top of the volcanics. The group is dis- or unconformably overlain by the black shales of the Coppershale Member of the Zechstein 1 (Werra) Formation or by the sandstones and red-bed mudstones of the Upper Rotliegend Group, which does not contain volcanics.

Comments:
Not yet designated because a complete succession comparable with the German development (e.g. Fabian et al 1962) has not been demonstrated in the Netherlands.
Origin of name
Name derived from the German stratigraphic nomenclature, where it is commonly applied for the lower, volcanic part of the Rotliegend.
