Scruff Spiculite Member

Code
SGGSP
Status
Formal (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1993).
Lithological description

Light green-grey, fine-grained, glauconitic and slightly argillaceous intensely bioturbated sandstones. Primary sedimentary structures are absent. Sponge spicules may make up the bulk of the framework forming a bioclastic sandstone.

Depositional setting

Offshore to shoreface environment.

Definition of lower boundary

Marked by an increase in GR-log readings, resulting from the downward increasing clay content. A hiatus occurs in the Central Graben, but deposition was continuous in the depocentre of the Terschelling Basin (Abbink et al. 2006). The abundant occurrence of the sponge spiculae or its moulds may be taken as an additional criterion.

Definition of upper boundary

Overlain by the Stortemelk Member, boundary is placed at the transition of a cylinder- or funnel-shaped GR-log pattern (Scruff Spiculite Member) to a bell-shaped pattern (Stortemelk Member). This level is nearly always marked by a clear GR-log peak, belonging to the Stortemelk Member.
