During the Permian (last period of the Paleozoic Era, 299 to 252 million years ago), all the larger and smaller lithosphere plates on Earth drifted towards each other, creating the supercontinent of Pangea. At this time, the Netherlands was located at the southern edge of the Southern Permian Basin, at about the same latitude as the present-day Sahara.
