Z3 (Leine) Formation

Code
ZEZ3
Status
Formal (NAM & RGD 1980). Amended (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1994).
Lithological description

Claystone - carbonate - anhydrite - salt succession, showing gradual thinning of the carbonate towards the centre of the basin. Thick Potassium and Magnesium salts are typical for the central parts of the basin. In the basin-margin area, the formation comprises claystones and sandstones.

Depositional setting

Marine.

Definition of lower boundary

Placed at the base of the Grey Salt Clay Member.

Definition of upper boundary

Formed by the base of the Red Salt Clay Member. At the fringe of the basin the formation is covered by the Zechstein Upper Claystone Formation.

Thickness indication
Up to 350 m.
