Many borehole logs in DINOloket are coupled with a lithostratigraphic interpretation that classifies the described sediments and rocks on the basis of characteristic lithological properties and stratigraphic position. Examples of the lithological properties of a unit are the dominant sediment or rock type, the grain-size distribution, gravel composition, shell content and colour. The stratigraphic position of a unit refers to its spatial relationship (both vertically and laterally) to adjacent units. The basic entity used in lithostratigraphic interpretation is the formation. Each formation can be subdivided into members and beds, and multiple interrelated formations may together form a group.
