Formal (NAM & RGD 1980). Amended (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1994).
Lithological description

Microlaminated, brownish-black bituminous shale. It is characterized on wire-line logs by high gamma-ray and low acoustic velocity readings. Fish remains are common.

Depositional setting

Marine, below wave base and deposited under euxidic conditions.

Definition of lower boundary

Top of the Rotiegend red/yellow sandstones or locally Carboniferous or older deposits.

Definition of upper boundary

Base of the overlying Z1 Carbonate Member.

Up to 1 m.

Regional correlation
UK: Kupferschiefer Formation; GER: Kupferschiefer; BEL: Coppershale Member.
Age
early Wuchiapingian. Re/Os datings in the basal Kupferschiefer revealed an age of at 257.3 ± 1.6 Ma (Brauns et al. 2003).
