Status
Formal (Van Adrichem Boogaert 1976). Amended (NAM & RGD 1980) & (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1994).
Lithological description
Sandstone-dominated succession, similar to Lower Slochteren Member, but less conglomeratic (NAM & RGD 1980).
Depositional setting
Fluvial to aeolian dominated sandflats and sand seas on the basin fringe to transitional zone domain.
Definition of lower boundary
Overlies the Ameland Member of the Silverpit Formation. In the Terschelling-Ameland area it conformably rests on the Buren Member of the Silverpit Formation, when the Lower Slochteren Member is absent. The lower boundary has been placed (going from top to base) at the base of the last definite sandstone bed before pasing into a claystone dominated interval.
Definition of upper boundary
The unit is overlain either by the red-brown claystones of the Ten Boer Member or by the black bituminous shales of the Coppershale Member of the Z1 (Werra) Formation.
Thickness indication
Generally less than 175 m, up to 521 m in L13-FE-104-S3.
