Formal (Westerhoff & Weerts 2003).

Medium to very coarse sand and coarse gravel, with cobbles, boulders and blocks. Local loam or clay, especially at the top, coarse sand lenses.

Fluvial (western Meuse).

Sharp contact with various Neogene, Paleogene, Cretaceous and Paleozoic units. Locally incised into ‘s Gravenvoeren or St. Pietersberg Members (Beegden Formation).

Locally exposed at the surface. Commonly, sharp contact with periglacial aeolian and local river loam and sand (Boxtel Formation). Locally incised by Gronsfeld or Caberg Members (Beegden Formation).

Up to about 10 m.

Southeasternmost part of the Netherlands, along the Meuse river.

North Sea: not present; UK: not present; GER: ?; BEL: Lanaken Formation (Gullentops et al. 2001).

Middle Pleistocene (Cromerian - Holsteinian).

Named after the village of Rothem in the southeastern Netherlands.
