Lithological description

Bluish and brownish grey clay, organic, shelly (marine). Intercalated tempestites of fine sand and silt (Westerhoff et al. 1987).

Depositional setting

Ebb channel of moribund tidal inlet, below the wave base (Westerhoff et al. 1987).

Definition of lower boundary

Commonly, unconformable contact with shelly marine sand (Eem Formation), coarse river sand (Kreftenheye Formation), coversand (Delwijnen Member, Boxtel Formation), lagoonal clay (Velsen Bed, Naaldwijk Formation) or tidal sand and clay (Wormer Member, Naaldwijk Formation).

Definition of upper boundary

Conformable transition into shoreface sand (Zandvoort Member, Naaldwijk Formation).

Up to about 30 m (offshore).

Restricted to a former tidal inlet at the coast northwest of Amsterdam.
