Lithological description

Predominantly soft, fine-grained limestone. The lower part contains 50-90% CaCO3 and glauconite. The upper part contains 80-95% CaCO3 and distinctive flint nodules which may contstitute up to 20% of its volume.

Depositional setting

Shallow marine environment.

Definition of lower boundary

Rests unconformably upon the Aachen, Vaals, and Oploo formations.

Definition of upper boundary

Conformably overlain by the Maastricht Formation.

Up to 175 m.
Geographical distribution
Occurs south of the Benzenrade- and Schin op Geul faults and on the Peel Block.
Regional correlation
UK: Rowe Formation (offshore); GER: Gulpen Formation; BEL: Gulpen Formation.

late Campanian - late Maastrichtian.

The type area is situated southeast of the village of Gulpen, in the Gulperberg area.
Origin of name
Named after the city of Gulpen.
