Lithological description
Light-greenish/grey limestone, dolomite and marl beds. The member is characterized by a considerable carbonate content throughout the Netherlands. In the southern and western onshore area, the claystone content is relatively high and anhydrites occur locally.
Depositional setting
Very shallow sea with fluctuating salinities, inner- (epeiric) carbonate ramp with storm influence.

Thickness indication
Less than 50 m (London-Brabant Massif and the Mid North Sea High), over 150 m (Dutch Central Graben and the Ems Low).
Geographical distribution
Regional correlation
UK: Dowsing Formation; GER: Lower Muschelkalk Formation (Wellenkalk); BEL: Lower Muschelkalk Member. In the area of the city of Winterswijk, the name 'Vossenveld Formation' is used for sediments that can be correlated with the Lower Muschelkalk Member outcropping in the Winterswijk Quarry (operated by Sibelco).
