Lithological description
Stiff greyish brown to dark brown clay, slightly sandy to very silty. Intercalated layers of fine to medium sand and lignite.
Depositional setting
Meandering fluvial (floodplain, swamp), lacustrine.
Definition of lower boundary
Generally sharp contact with fluvial sand and gravel (Waubach Member, Kieseloolite Formation).
Definition of upper boundary
Generally exposed at the surface. Elsewhere, transition into Kieseloolite Formation (undifferentiated).
Thickness indication
Up to about 80 m.
Geographical distribution
Southeasternmost Netherlands, including Roer Valley Graben.
Regional correlation
North Sea: not present; UK: not present; GER: Rotton Member, Kieseloolith Formation; BEL: part of the Mol Formation, Kiezeloöliet Formation, Brunssum I, Pey and Brunssum II Members.

Pliocene.

Origin of name
Named after the village of Brunssum, on the German border in the southeasternmost Netherlands.
