Lithological description

Dark brown to yellowish brown loam (Kuyl 1980), sandy (loess). In the southeast, usually subdivided into a lower (low carbonate content) and upper (higher carbonate content) part. Palaeosols.

Depositional setting

Periglacial aeolian (loess).

Definition of lower boundary

Sharp, unconformable contact with river sand and gravel (Beegden Formation) and, locally, with Neogene and Cretaceous marine deposits.

Definition of upper boundary

Commonly exposed at the surface.

Thickness indication
Up to about 10 m.
Geographical distribution
Southeasternmost Netherlands and central-eastern Netherlands bordering a major ice-pushed complex.

North Sea: ?; UK: informal Pegwell Formation (McMillan et al. 2011); GER: ?; BEL: Romont Group (former Gembloux Formation).

Origin of name
Named after the village of Schimmert, in the southeasternmost Netherlands.
