Formal (Bakker et al. 2003).
Lithological description
(Dark) grey to (dark) brown silty clay (varved, calcareous, stiff), with local laminae of very fine to medium, calcareous sand. Local glauconite, shells and dropstones. Slump structures and loadcasts.
Depositional setting
Glaciolacustrine (ice-proximal to ice-distal, with turbidity currents (Jelgersma & Breeuwer 1975).
Definition of lower boundary
Generally sharp contact with mostly gravelly fluvial sand.
Definition of upper boundary
Gradual transition into non-varved clay (Uitdam Member, undifferentiated).
Thickness indication
Less than 60 m.
Geographical distribution
Glacial basins in the central Netherlands.
Regional correlation
North Sea: part of Cleaver Bank Formation (defined and mapped in conjunction with the British Geological Survey; Laban 1995); UK: part of Wolston Glacigenic Formation (McMillan et al. 2011); GER?; BEL: not present.
Age
late Middle Pleistocene (Late Saalian).
