Lithological description

Yellow to greenish brown basal gyttja and brown to black eutrophic (reed) peat with local (pine) tree trunks, transitioning into mesotrophic peat, with oligotrophic moss peat at the top.

Depositional setting

Lacustrine, raised bog (drainage divide).

Definition of lower boundary

Gradual (rooted horizon) to sharp contact with periglacial sand (Boxtel Formation).

Definition of upper boundary

Commonly exposed at the surface.

Up to about 2 m.
Geographical distribution
Fragmentary in the eastern and southern Netherlands.
Regional correlation
North Sea: not present; UK: Flanders Moss Peat Formation (McMillan et al. 2011); GER: Torfkomplex (Preuss 1979); BEL: Botrange Bed (Gullentops et al. 2001).
