Status
Formal (Bosch et al. 2003).
Lithological description
Grey to brownish grey medium to very coarse sand, gravelly, non-calcareous, slightly micaceous, multi-coloured. Locally, greenish grey loam, grey to greenish grey sand with clay laminae, grey to brownish grey clay or organogenic sediment (Bosch et al. 2014).
Depositional setting
Fluvial (Rhine), including channel, bank, crevasse (sand), abandoned channel and oxbow lake (clay, loam, peat and gyttja). Northward, coastal and shallow marine, including tidal channel and tidal flat (sand with clay laminae), lagoonal (clay, loam), marsh and swamp (peat). estuarine, tidal and shallow marine.
Definition of lower boundary
Unconformable, partly diffuse transition into fluvioglacial sand (Peelo Formation), gradual transition into fluvial sand (Urk Formation, undifferentiated).
Definition of upper boundary
Sharp and unconformable contact with till (Gieten Member, Drente Formation), marine sand (Eem Formation), or tidal sand and clay (Naaldwijk Formation). Gradual transition into finer periglacial sand (Drachten and Boxtel Formations). Diffuse transition into gravelly glaciofluvial sand (Schaarsbergen Member, Drente Formation) or into gravelly fluvial sand (Kreftenheye Formation), except where separated by a coarse channel lag.
Thickness indication
Up to about 50 m, with clay layers up to 5 m thick.
Geographical distribution
Northwestern Netherlands, where the Urk Formation lies stratigraphically on top of the Peelo Formation.
Regional correlation
North Sea: marine Egmond Ground Formation; UK: not present; GER: not present; BEL: not present.
Age
Middle Pleistocene (Elsterian - middle Saalian).
Origin of name
Named after the village of Tijnje in the northern Netherlands.
